Courthouse security procedures are robbing Humboldt County citizens of their freedom

Last Friday I went to to the County Courthouse to pick up some legal forms and found myself going through the same paranoia that inhabits our nation's airports since 9-11-01 and I'm seriously wondering how on earth we've allowed this paranoid state of mind to reach all the way across the nation to Humboldt County? A security check for EVERYONE who has to use our County's Courthouse? This is insane to me given that when I Googled criminal attacks happening within the Humboldt County Courthouse, I found none.

Has there EVER been anyone shot, stabbed, raped, or bombed within our Courthouse in anyone's memory? Sure, I've read reports of other cities where some disgruntled person comes in and shoots the judge who he thought did him wrong, but that comes with the territory of judgeship.

I repeat, it is INSANE for our community to allow government paranoia to reach all the way to our lives here in Humboldt County where there is ZERO threat to national security. Please Protest this attack on our freedom as residents of Humboldt County. I counted 4 officers at that check point, four salaries being paid for insane paranoia. Who allowed this to happen?

Call on your Supervisors to stop this terrible precedent from becoming established rule. It makes doing business at the Courthouse like going through an Israeli check-point to search Palestinians for bombs.. is Humboldt County the new Occupied Territory?

Welcome to the new world order, my friend.

No, I won't welcome it at all. I've been to Israel and can see the future here and it stinks as far as freedom goes. Rose, why do you think we should pay with our freedoms taken away from us for protecting government officials from paranoia?

If there had been any sort of precedent at our courthouse for this level of security I wouldn't be posting this but I checked--you check, no one's ever done ANYTHING remotely violent inside our courthouse except for a prisoner or two in jail trying to make a break for it, without weapons, something a friend of mine told me who knows from the inside.

The rich don't care, Rose, what security procedures average American citizens have to go through. They fly in their personal jets and pass through special customs for the rich, or don't you know that? So they could care less about us common peons having to protect their wealthy lives that seem so prone to gaining that wealth through exploitation of poor countries' resources.

The level of security since 9-11 can be placed on the doorstep of U.S. support for European Jewish invasion of Palestine by force and illegal U.N. mandate that quite on purpose forgot to ask a single Palestinian if they minded their country being given away to appease European and American guilt? A whole country in the Holy Land pays for this last vestige of European religious colonialism and since 9-11 so do we Americans with our steps taken to match Israel's paranoia.

God, do I hope Obama remembers his root heritage and stops this madness against Palestinians and removes paranoia from our lives where we have to protect the rich and government officials from the consequences they themselves created.

It's gonna get worse, not better. you're going to see a clamping down like you have never imagined. quite the opposite of the Change you imagined.

I Hope i am wrong - but it looks like taxes up, draft back in, all the fat cat corrupt liars who brought you the sub prime disaster back in power, and appointed to key positions, looks like censorship coming... the very activists you despise are now in control, that mentality will rule.

You'll get your negotiations with Iran and Palestine though. Of that there is no doubt - it's already happening - Hamas — We met Obama advisers. Terrorist group says campaign asked it to keep contact secret until after election

They join a long line of people who were told to 'keep quiet' until AFTER the election.

There's a pretty powerful machine behind all this. Newsweek is actually finally doing their job and some of it is coming out. Guess they were told to keep quiet, too.

Rose, sometimes your paranoid streak just runs to deep for me to stand and it bothers me that I can't say anything as an intelligent friend break it for you. You backed a killer ape for President, Bush, and he really did America in in every way, politically and economically. Now Obama has to pick up the mess of American hatred inherited from Bush as well as the economic mess. Every time Republicans get into office they wreck the economy because for all their touting business interests they never really know what they're doing.

I have wondered how you could ever give support to Sarah Palin knowing your father's profession but that you did, killing wolves in the most inhumane way possible be damned, and I wonder that you can continue to find paranoid reasons to worry about the US policies which as far as I can tell are at the bottom of the barrel now and can only go upward in human rights concern vs. money and security issues for protecting rich cats and their government lackeys.

Yes, Obama is not going to be a rubber stamp for Zionists even though in order to get elected and a government going he's had to make a prominent show of Israel support. But mark my words, that's going to end for ANY president who comes into office with an ounce of human compassion. Remember what Kennedy walked into unprepared and how it effected him, some say the reason for his assassination being his real change of heart about fighting the Communists the old way, the same way Neo-Cons want the USA to fight the new Menace, Islam.

Obama's far too close to Islam and all the brown-skinned peoples of the world to really continue the white people's power tripping over their dead bodies to get to their natural resources. Muslims will now begin to inform Obama about the real history of their oppression at the hands of Western powers and how sick and tired they are of it and want it stopped immediately. Even the Taliban will bargain with Obama to cease the war as long as they can continue to establish Islamic government, but watch there too, the old Islamic fundies will now lose power and influence because they were Created by the West as defenders of the land and faith of peoples being attacked by Western powers, e.g the Western orchestrated through the Western controlled UN in 1947 to illegally establish Israel ousting the native Arab population to make room for European Jews to appease the guilt of Europeans. All this done at the expense of innocent Palestinians, not one of whom ever involved in the European Jewish holocaust done by Europeans.

Muslims all over the world are hoping that Obama will tell their story truthfully to Americans for the first time so that your type of paranoia is seen for what it is: the result of your whole life seeing images of Arabs made in Jewish controlled Hollywood and on the news as sinister beings when in fact what you are seeing are totally desperate peoples fighting foreign oppression in their traditional ways which are not ours but were, with the same kinds of senseless brutality, less than a hundred and fifty years ago. You really need to talk to local Native Americans about what happened to their ancestors right here in Humboldt County. It makes the Taliban look tame.

Please start thinking Peace and reconciliation and help end needless paranoia that fuels such overreaction idiocy as we see now in our backyard County courthouse. There's far more reason to hope for peaceful conditions and now that the money system is back in smarter Democratic hands, it will get back on track as Clinton did before from Reagan's mess.

Between Hope And Reality
An Open Letter to Senator Obama

Political Independence
By Ralph Nader

Dear Senator Obama:

In your nearly two-year presidential campaign, the words "hope and change," "change and hope" have been your trademark declarations. Yet there is an asymmetry between those objectives and your political character that succumbs to contrary centers of power that want not "hope and change" but the continuation of the power-entrenched status quo.

Far more than Senator McCain, you have received enormous, unprecedented contributions from corporate interests, Wall Street interests and, most interestingly, big corporate law firm attorneys. Never before has a Democratic nominee for President achieved this supremacy over his Republican counterpart. Why, apart from your unconditional vote for the $700 billion Wall Street bailout, are these large corporate interests investing so much in Senator Obama? Could it be that in your state Senate record, your U.S. Senate record and your presidential campaign record (favoring nuclear power, coal plants, offshore oil drilling, corporate subsidies including the 1872 Mining Act and avoiding any comprehensive program to crack down on the corporate crime wave and the bloated, wasteful military budget, for example) you have shown that you are their man?

To advance change and hope, the presidential persona requires character, courage, integrity-- not expediency, accommodation and short-range opportunism. Take, for example, your transformation from an articulate defender of Palestinian rights in Chicago before your run for the U.S. Senate to an acolyte, a dittoman for the hard-line AIPAC lobby, which bolsters the militaristic oppression, occupation, blockage, colonization and land-water seizures over the years of the Palestinian peoples and their shrunken territories in the West Bank and Gaza. Eric Alterman summarized numerous polls in a December 2007 issue of The Nation magazine showing that AIPAC policies are opposed by a majority of Jewish-Americans.

You know quite well that only when the U.S. Government supports the Israeli and Palestinian peace movements, that years ago worked out a detailed two-state solution (which is supported by a majority of Israelis and Palestinians), will there be a chance for a peaceful resolution of this 60-year plus conflict. Yet you align yourself with the hard-liners, so much so that in your infamous, demeaning speech to the AIPAC convention right after you gained the nomination of the Democratic Party, you supported an "undivided Jerusalem," and opposed negotiations with Hamas-- the elected government in Gaza. Once again, you ignored the will of the Israeli people who, in a March 1, 2008 poll by the respected newspaper Haaretz, showed that 64% of Israelis favored "direct negotiations with Hamas." Siding with the AIPAC hard-liners is what one of the many leading Palestinians advocating dialogue and peace with the Israeli people was describing when he wrote "Anti-semitism today is the persecution of Palestinian society by the Israeli state."

During your visit to Israel this summer, you scheduled a mere 45 minutes of your time for Palestinians with no news conference, and no visit to Palestinian refugee camps that would have focused the media on the brutalization of the Palestinians. Your trip supported the illegal, cruel blockade of Gaza in defiance of international law and the United Nations charter. You focused on southern Israeli casualties which during the past year have totaled one civilian casualty to every 400 Palestinian casualties on the Gaza side. Instead of a statesmanship that decried all violence and its replacement with acceptance of the Arab League's 2002 proposal to permit a viable Palestinian state within the 1967 borders in return for full economic and diplomatic relations between Arab countries and Israel, you played the role of a cheap politician, leaving the area and Palestinians with the feeling of much shock and little awe.

David Levy, a former Israeli peace negotiator, described your trip succinctly: "There was almost a willful display of indifference to the fact that there are two narratives here. This could serve him well as a candidate, but not as a President."

Palestinian American commentator, Ali Abunimah, noted that Obama did not utter a single criticism of Israel, "of its relentless settlement and wall construction, of the closures that make life unlivable for millions of Palestinians. ...Even the Bush administration recently criticized Israeli's use of cluster bombs against Lebanese civilians [see www.atfl.org for elaboration]. But Obama defended Israeli's assault on Lebanon as an exercise of its 'legitimate right to defend itself.'"

In numerous columns Gideon Levy, writing in Haaretz, strongly criticized the Israeli government's assault on civilians in Gaza, including attacks on "the heart of a crowded refugee camp... with horrible bloodshed" in early 2008.

Israeli writer and peace advocate-- Uri Avnery-- described Obama's appearance before AIPAC as one that "broke all records for obsequiousness and fawning, adding that Obama "is prepared to sacrifice the most basic American interests. After all, the US has a vital interest in achieving an Israeli-Palestinian peace that will allow it to find ways to the hearts of the Arab masses from Iraq to Morocco. Obama has harmed his image in the Muslim world and mortgaged his future-- if and when he is elected president.," he said, adding, "Of one thing I am certain: Obama's declarations at the AIPAC conference are very, very bad for peace. And what is bad for peace is bad for Israel, bad for the world and bad for the Palestinian people."

A further illustration of your deficiency of character is the way you turned your back on the Muslim-Americans in this country. You refused to send surrogates to speak to voters at their events. Having visited numerous churches and synagogues, you refused to visit a single Mosque in America. Even George W. Bush visited the Grand Mosque in Washington D.C. after 9/11 to express proper sentiments of tolerance before a frightened major religious group of innocents.

Although the New York Times published a major article on June 24, 2008 titled "Muslim Voters Detect a Snub from Obama" (by Andrea Elliott), citing examples of your aversion to these Americans who come from all walks of life, who serve in the armed forces and who work to live the American dream. Three days earlier the International Herald Tribune published an article by Roger Cohen titled "Why Obama Should Visit a Mosque." None of these comments and reports change your political bigotry against Muslim-Americans-- even though your father was a Muslim from Kenya.

Perhaps nothing illustrated your utter lack of political courage or even the mildest version of this trait than your surrendering to demands of the hard-liners to prohibit former president Jimmy Carter from speaking at the Democratic National Convention. This is a tradition for former presidents and one accorded in prime time to Bill Clinton this year.

Here was a President who negotiated peace between Israel and Egypt, but his recent book pressing the dominant Israeli superpower to avoid Apartheid of the Palestinians and make peace was all that it took to sideline him. Instead of an important address to the nation by Jimmy Carter on this critical international problem, he was relegated to a stroll across the stage to "tumultuous applause," following a showing of a film about the Carter Center's post-Katrina work. Shame on you, Barack Obama!

But then your shameful behavior has extended to many other areas of American life. (See the factual analysis by my running mate, Matt Gonzalez, on www.votenader.org). You have turned your back on the 100-million poor Americans composed of poor whites, African-Americans, and Latinos. You always mention helping the "middle class" but you omit, repeatedly, mention of the "poor" in America.

Should you be elected President, it must be more than an unprecedented upward career move following a brilliantly unprincipled campaign that spoke "change" yet demonstrated actual obeisance to the concentration power of the "corporate supremacists." It must be about shifting the power from the few to the many. It must be a White House presided over by a black man who does not turn his back on the downtrodden here and abroad but challenges the forces of greed, dictatorial control of labor, consumers and taxpayers, and the militarization of foreign policy. It must be a White House that is transforming of American politics-- opening it up to the public funding of elections (through voluntary approaches)-- and allowing smaller candidates to have a chance to be heard on debates and in the fullness of their now restricted civil liberties. Call it a competitive democracy.

Your presidential campaign again and again has demonstrated cowardly stands. "Hope" some say springs eternal." But not when "reality" consumes it daily.

Sincerely,
Ralph Nader

Let us hope and pray Obama did all this in order to get elected in this country. If Obama does continue the AIPAC agenda then we who seek peace in the Middle East and justice for Palestinians will have been completely deceived as will the billion+ Muslims hoping beyond hope Obama remembers his father's roots in Islam and the cry of freedom from Palestinians.

I have hope for a significant change on the order JFK went through after his ordeal with Castro's Cuba where he finally told the hawks to buzz off and No to war with Vietnam. Then his assassination. We shall see. Nader wrote to Bill Gates once telling him to give back to the world something significant and not tokenism of what he's gotten from it and Bill did change drastically in his charitable giving.
